Analyzing the Patterns of Truck Attacks
In a recent incident, a group of armed individuals intercepted a convoy of trucks near Van Reenen’s pass. Shockingly, they forcibly removed the drivers from their vehicles, set the trucks on fire, and swiftly made their escape, leaving behind a scene of destruction.
The Road Freight Association is now urgently demanding action to be taken against the culprits, highlighting the immense potential damage these attacks can inflict on the vital logistics sector.
Patrick O’Leary, the editor of Fleetwatch, has shared distressing news of yet another truck arson event that occurred on the N4 route last Sunday night. Armed assailants targeted multiple trucks, coercing the drivers to evacuate their vehicles before they reached the tunnel on the N4 heading towards Nelspruit. As a result, at least four trucks were consumed by the raging flames.
Amidst the condemnation of these attacks, Sifiso Nyathi, the secretary of the All Truck Drivers Forum, suggests delving into the underlying causes. He firmly asserts that this issue has persisted over time and proposes that the government should enact legislation prohibiting the employment of foreign individuals as truck drivers to effectively combat these assaults. Nyathi emphasizes that driving is not a skill in scarcity, and therefore, it should be exclusively reserved for South African citizens.
O’Leary echoes the concerns regarding this long-standing issue and advocates for measures that prevent companies from hiring foreign drivers who lack legal authorization in the country. He makes a clear distinction, specifying that his concerns lie with drivers who are unlawfully employed rather than those who possess valid documentation. Shockingly, O’Leary reveals that some non-compliant companies exploit foreign drivers by offering them significantly lower wages compared to their South African counterparts, reflecting deplorable labor practices akin to modern-day slavery.
Additionally, O’Leary suspects that although the Allied Forum has condemned these attacks, there might be splinter groups within their ranks that hold more radical views and could be directly involved in these distressing incidents.
Expressing his viewpoint, O’Leary emphasizes the urgent need for heightened attention to the road freight sector, recognizing its indispensable role in the national economy. He calls for comprehensive and top-level focus on this critical industry, especially considering the failures of the rail system, as it serves as the lifeline of our economic activities.
In conclusion, O’Leary stresses the absolute necessity of implementing robust security measures to ensure the safety of trucks on our roads, safeguarding the integrity of the supply chain and the prosperity of the nation.
