Stepping up Security
In response to the spate of truck attacks that began on the 9th of July, the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) has mobilized more than 800 personnel to take immediate action.
This deployment falls under “Operation Prosper,” an ongoing initiative by the Joint Operations Division of the SANDF aimed at providing military support for internal safety and security operations. Typically, soldiers are tasked with safeguarding critical locations, such as highway bridges, and providing perimeter security to support police actions and operations.
Department of Defence (DoD) Head of Communication, Siphiwe Dlamini, publicly announced the latest utilization of military force a week ago. Still, details about the number of personnel and the deployment duration were not disclosed.
In response to a query from Freight-Risk, the SANDF Directorate Corporate Communication (DCC) provided clarification. The deployment involves “over 800 personnel” approved for four weeks across six provinces, rather than the four provinces mentioned in the initial statement. Soldiers are now stationed in the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North West regions, expected to remain there until 11 August unless the deployment period is extended.
High-risk areas, such as toll gates at Mooi River and Marianhill, along the major road connecting Gauteng and Durban, have received significant military presence to curb further incidents.
The recent truck torchings, approximately 24 in total, have been attributed to a combination of factors, including the involvement of a truck drivers’ organization with ties to former President Jacob Zuma and the xenophobic group, Operation Dudula. A primary concern driving these attacks is discontent among South African truck drivers, who believe foreign drivers are favoured by companies, creating tension for some time.
Though law enforcement has made progress, apprehending five suspects linked to the burnings, the masterminds behind these acts of arson remain at large. Police Minister Bheki Cele has identified 12 individuals of interest in connection with the incidents.
The situation remains critical, and the SANDF’s involvement underscores the seriousness of the issue. As the government and security forces work to address the root causes and bring perpetrators to justice, it is hoped that these actions will effectively quell the wave of truck torchings and restore stability to the affected regions.
