President Ramaphosa response to the Fight against Domestic Terrorism
In response to the assault on Trucks. The crucial part of our supply chain across the country, President Cyril Ramaphosa has taken decisive action to protect critical supply routes. More than 1,700 soldiers have been deployed from July 12 to August 14, working alongside the police to stem the tide of destruction. The government’s commitment to this operation amounts to over R105 million, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. This blog sheds light on the measures taken by the South African government to safeguard law and order and maintain stability.

The Truck Burning Crisis
The torching of trucks has wreaked havoc on South Africa’s major provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Limpopo, and the Free State. With hundreds of thousands of rands in damages and increasing concerns over supply chain disruptions, it became imperative for the government to address the issue urgently.
A Coordinated Effort
President Ramaphosa’s letter to Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and National Council of Provinces chairperson Amos Masondo outlined the deployment of 1,720 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to counteract the ongoing attacks. This deployment falls under the provisions of section 201(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.
Working Together: Army and Police Collaboration
In his letter, President Ramaphosa emphasized that the soldiers would collaborate with the police to maintain law and order during the operation. The joint effort aims to identify and apprehend the culprits responsible for the truck burnings and bring them to justice swiftly.
Truck Burning Suspects Apprehended
As a positive development, five individuals were recently arrested in connection with more than 21 truck burnings in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. One of the suspects was caught on camera setting a truck on fire in Mpumalanga, leading to his arrest and potentially further breakthroughs in the investigation.
Prior Experience and Expanded Measures
This is not the first time the South African government has turned to the army for support during times of unrest. In the past, troops were brought in to stabilize the country during moments of crisis. Additionally, amid the ongoing energy challenges faced by Eskom, a number of soldiers have been deployed to safeguard power stations in Mpumalanga following intensified load shedding and allegations of sabotage.
My final thought
The assault on one of our critical part of our economical value chain has posed significant challenges to our country’s security and economy. President Ramaphosa’s decisive deployment of soldiers in collaboration with the police is a crucial step to curb these attacks and restore safety to the nation’s roads. As the joint operation progresses, it is hoped that the instigators will be swiftly apprehended and that the measures taken will deter any further incidents of truck burning. Protecting the country’s supply routes is paramount, and with a united effort, South Africa can overcome this crisis and move toward a safer and more stable future.
